Script writing
Using AI to Write Video Scripts (Without Sounding Like AI)
How to use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini to draft video scripts that still sound like you: prompts that work, what to edit, and a workflow from AI draft to teleprompter.
In this guide
AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are now part of most creators' workflow. They are excellent at structure, variations and editing. They are bad at sounding like you unless you make them. Here is a workflow that keeps the speed and loses the robot.
What AI is good at
- Turning messy notes into a clear structure
- Generating 20 hook options in seconds
- Cutting a 3-minute script to 60 seconds
- Rewriting for a different platform or audience
- Spotting gaps in an argument
What AI is bad at
- Your stories, opinions and experience
- Specific, verifiable details
- Your vocabulary and rhythm
- Knowing what your audience already knows
The workflow
1. Brain dump first
Record or type your raw thoughts: the point, the story, the example, the opinion. This is the part only you can supply.
2. Prompt with context
A prompt that works much better than "write a script about X":
You are editing a script I will read aloud on camera.
Audience: [who]. Platform: [TikTok / YouTube / LinkedIn]. Length: [60 seconds, ~150 words].
Goal: after watching, the viewer will [outcome].
Here are my raw notes: [paste].
Here is a script I wrote before, match its tone: [paste].
Rules: short spoken sentences, contractions, no clichés like "game-changer",
"dive in", "in today's fast-paced world". Keep my examples. Don't invent facts.
Give me 5 hook options, then the script.
3. Edit for voice
Go through the draft and:
- Replace any word you would not say out loud
- Put your real example back where the AI generalised it
- Cut the intro sentence (AI loves a warm-up)
- Check every fact and number yourself
4. Read it aloud
Stumbles reveal AI phrasing. Fix every line you trip over. Our writing for the ear rules are a good checklist.
5. Add delivery marks
Add [pause], emphasis and section headings so the script is ready to perform. See how to format a teleprompter script.
6. Send it to your teleprompter
Copy the final version and share it to your prompter app. In Cue you can share text from the AI app straight in, or tap "Paste as new script". Cue's paste tidy-up also cleans the odd line breaks you get when copying from a web page or PDF.
Phrases that give AI away
Audiences have learned to spot these. Cut them:
- "In today's fast-paced world"
- "Let's dive in" / "Let's unpack this"
- "It's not just X, it's Y"
- "Game-changer", "unlock", "elevate", "seamless"
- Lists of exactly three adjectives
Privacy note
Think before pasting confidential material (unreleased products, client names, financials) into any cloud AI tool, and check its data settings. Once the script is final, a local-only prompter keeps the finished version on your device.
The bottom line
Use AI for speed and structure. Keep the stories, opinions and final edit human. The camera rewards authenticity, and nothing sounds less authentic than a script you have never said out loud.
Frequently asked questions
Is it okay to use AI to write video scripts?
Yes, as a drafting and editing tool. Audiences respond to your perspective and delivery, so treat the AI draft as raw material and make it yours.
How do I stop AI scripts sounding generic?
Feed it your own notes, examples and a sample of your past scripts, ban clichés in the prompt, and always rewrite the hook and examples yourself.
Can I paste an AI script straight into a teleprompter?
You can, but read it aloud first. AI drafts often have long sentences and phrases you would never say. Tidy them before recording.
