The first time you read from a teleprompter, it feels strange. You are reading and talking at the same time, while trying to look natural. That awkwardness is normal, and it fades quickly. This walkthrough keeps your first session short and simple.

Step 1: Write a short script

Start with 60 to 100 words. That is about 30 to 45 seconds of speech. Choose something easy: introduce yourself, explain what you do or share one tip.

Hi, I am Alex. I help small teams write clearer project updates. Today, one quick tip: start every update with the decision you need. Not the background, not the history. The decision. Your team will thank you. Try it this week.

Write it the way you speak. Short sentences, everyday words.

Step 2: Read it aloud once

Before using the prompter, read it aloud. Change any line that feels awkward. See writing scripts for the ear.

Step 3: Set up the phone

Place your phone on a stand at eye level, about arm's length away. Face a window or a soft light. Keep the background simple. Our phone video setup guide covers the details.

Step 4: Set comfortable text

Make the text larger than you think you need. Set a slow pace to start. You can speed up later. See font size and distance.

Step 5: Practise once without recording

Run the prompter and read along without recording. Get a feel for the speed. Adjust if you are racing to keep up or waiting for the text.

Step 6: Record

Take a breath, smile and start. A countdown helps you settle before the text moves. Do not stop for small slips. Just keep going.

Step 7: Watch it back

Watch the take once. Notice one thing that worked and one thing to improve. Common first-session notes:

  • Pace too fast
  • Eyes moving too much
  • Serious expression
  • Voice a little flat

Pick one and try another take.

Step 8: Stop after three takes

Three takes is enough for a first session. Stopping while it still feels manageable makes it easier to come back tomorrow.

What to try next

You will improve quickly

Teleprompter reading is a skill, and early progress is fast. After a handful of short sessions, most people find they look and sound much more natural. Our practice drills help speed this up.

Frequently asked questions

How long should my first teleprompter script be?

Short. Around 60 to 100 words, or 30 to 45 seconds. Build up to longer scripts once reading feels comfortable.

Is it normal to feel awkward the first time?

Yes. Almost everyone does. Most people feel much more comfortable after three or four short sessions.

Do I need special equipment?

No. A phone, a simple stand and a prompter app are enough to start.
