How to Repurpose One Long Video Into Five Short Clips
Turn a single YouTube video, webinar or podcast episode into several short vertical clips, with a simple method for finding, cutting and reframing moments.
In this guide
A single long video contains several short ones. A ten-minute YouTube video, a webinar or a podcast episode usually has at least three to five moments that can stand alone as vertical clips. Repurposing them saves time and reaches people who would never watch the full version.
Step 1: Find standalone moments
Watch or skim the long video and look for moments that:
- Make one clear point
- Tell a short story
- Include a strong opinion or surprising fact
- Answer a common question
Each clip must make sense without context. If it starts with "So, as I said earlier", it does not work yet.
Step 2: Find or add a hook
The best moments in a long video often start slowly. Trim to the first strong line, or record a short new hook to place before it. A five-second opener like "Here is the mistake most people make with captions" can turn a good moment into a great clip. See video hook formulas.
Step 3: Reframe for vertical
Crop the horizontal footage to vertical, keeping your face in the upper third. If you know you will repurpose, frame long videos with extra space around you. Our talking head guide covers framing.
Step 4: Add captions
Every clip needs captions. Use your original script as the base. See captions for talking videos.
Step 5: End cleanly
A clip that ends mid-thought frustrates viewers. Cut at the end of a sentence, or add a short line pointing to the full video.
Plan for clips while scripting
The easiest way to repurpose is to plan for it before you record. When writing the long script, make each section self-contained, with its own clear opening line. In Cue, # headings split the script into sections you can jump between, which makes it natural to write in clip-sized pieces.
A simple ratio
For each long video, aim for:
- One full video
- Three to five short clips
- One or two quote graphics or text posts
That turns one recording session into a week of content.
Check each clip on its own
Before posting, watch every clip as if you had never seen the full video. Does it make sense? Is the point clear? Does it end properly? If any answer is no, trim, add a line or skip that clip. A weak clip is not worth posting just because it exists.
Do not post everything at once
Spread clips over several days or weeks. Each one gets its own chance to reach people.

Frequently asked questions
How long should repurposed clips be?
Most perform well between 20 and 60 seconds. Each should make sense on its own without the full video.
Should I re-record clips instead of cutting them?
Sometimes. If a moment needs a stronger hook, recording a new 5-second opening can make the clip work much better.
How do I reframe a horizontal video for vertical?
Crop around the speaker, keeping their face in the upper third. Recording with extra space around you makes this easier later.
