Instagram Reels Scripts: Length, Structure and Examples
How long Instagram Reels should be, how to structure a talking Reel, and example scripts for tips, stories and behind-the-scenes clips.
In this guide
Instagram Reels reward clear, quick, visual ideas. Talking Reels can perform well, but only if they get to the point fast. A short script is the easiest way to make sure they do.
How long should a Reel be?
Instagram now allows longer Reels than it used to, up to three minutes in the app. That does not mean every Reel should be long. For talking Reels, 15 to 60 seconds is usually the sweet spot. Go longer when the topic genuinely needs it and you can keep giving value.
| Length | Approx. words | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 15 seconds | 35 to 40 | One quick tip |
| 30 seconds | 70 to 80 | Tip with example |
| 60 seconds | 140 to 160 | Short story or 3 tips |
| 90 seconds | 210 to 240 | Mini tutorial |
A reliable structure
- Hook: stop the scroll in the first line.
- Value: one tip, story or insight.
- End: a clear last line or call to action.
Example: tip Reel (30 seconds)
Stop starting videos with "Hey guys". Start with the point instead. Like this: three ways to sound more confident on camera. One: slow down. Two: pause instead of saying um. Three: look at the lens, not the screen. Save this for your next video.
Example: story Reel (45 seconds)
I almost quit posting videos last year. Every take took twenty tries because I kept forgetting lines. Then I started writing only the first sentence of each point and reading it from my phone. Now I record in two takes. If you are stuck, try that.
Example: behind the scenes (20 seconds)
This is what a Tuesday looks like before a launch. Three coffees, one whiteboard, and a lot of crossing things out. Tomorrow you will see what we built.
Make it watchable without sound
Add captions. Use text on screen for the hook. Many people watch Reels muted at first and unmute only if the opening grabs them.
Record with your eyes on the lens
Talking Reels feel more personal when you look into the camera. A prompter near the lens helps. Cue presents over your camera and keeps the recording on your device until you choose to export it.
Write hooks first
The first line decides whether anyone sees the rest. Spend as long on it as on the rest of the script. Our hook formulas give you starting points, and the short-form script template covers cross-platform scripts.

Many talking Reels work best between 15 and 60 seconds. Use longer only when the content keeps paying off.
Do Reels need to be scripted?
Not word for word, but a planned hook, one main point and a clear ending make a big difference to how many people watch to the end.
